Claudia told me there are going to be small classes for me and the other american exchange student if i want to go, and i am more than willing!! truthfully im tired of ppl talking around me and me not understanding. tomorrow it will be 2 wks for me in Germany, and i can hardly believe i am here already. right now i am very tired, because at the Dietrich-Bonehoffer Gymnasium i played basketball, and lets just say i kicked. i was happy to play basketball again, and one girl said i was verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry good, but i just believe i have an 8th grade degree, nothign more. but i did miss basketball a lot i found out, and it was a great way for me to loosin up ( becuz pilates has stopped working). Luisa and I went to have the best ice cream in the woooorld today, but i didnt get much considering the bank wont let me get an account til im 18. buuuuuuuut mr pannes says he will find a way for me, so it shouldnt be like that for long. but i loooooooooooooooooove you all and i miss you still soooooooooo much!!!

Letter 2 from Lauren Anderson Greetings everyone!
I can't believe that I have been here a week! As soon as I arrived the other students swept me under their wing and are helping me constantly. It's a bilingual school so many of the students have been on exchanges and many have come to the school so it is routine for them.
The school is very small in my grade there's about 20 kids and is some of my classes about 7, but I am really enjoying it. Most days I go to school at 7 and get out at 12 but it varies some.
One girl has really befriended me, her name is Lucia. Yesterday she invited me to her house after school on only my second day. I wish I had treated the exchanges in America this well. In the afternoon we went to a salsa class where I was noticed but certainly not for my sexy Latin moves. I had a very good time there and I think I am going to start going to the classes on a regular basis.
I hope to hear from you all soon!
Lauren

Letter 3 from Mary Hestilow Hey everyone, I'm in Taipei! Long ride over, seriously. I love it here! It's beautiful and green (but very hot and humid!). I start school in less than 2 weeks-- only 2 other exchange students go there, both Americans. My family's great! Real nice and funny, and I live in a lovely house/apartment (it's on the 20th floor!). In Okla, right now it's 10:30pm, August 19th. In 20F, No 219-1 Sindian City, Taiwan, the current local time is 11:31am, August 20th. Somehow, I missed Saturday. I'm rambling! Okay, no more of this. I will write more later.
Love! -- Mary Hestilow

- The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is one year in duration.
- It prepares young people to become the leaders of tomorrow.
- It teaches them to peacefully seek solutions to global issues by sharing international perspectives.
The student must be over 15 years old and not over 18 1/2 at the start of the school year. The selection criteria are based on character, poise, academic record, and the maturity and confidence to function as a youth ambassador.
One of the obvious benefits to to these youth ambassadors are the mastery of a foreign language and culture. They also have the ability to enrich the Rotary Club, community, school and host family.
The program costs are approximately $3,500 to $5,000 and include airfare, insurance, and personal allowance. The host club provides a monthly allowance, transportation, room and board, and school expenses. An additional expense to the student costing about $1,500 is a 2 - 4 week tour of their country or surrounding countries. Participation in these tours are usually optional.
The best time to be a Rotary Youth Exchange student is after high school. The confidence and maturity gained from a year abroad can ease the transition to college. However, many prefer to go overseas during their junior year.
