What is Rotary International?

Rotary, the world's first and most international service club, was founded by attorney Paul P. Harris (1868-1947), on February 23, 1905 in Chicago, Illinois. Harris and three others gathered to discuss his idea of periodically bringing together a group of businessmen from different professions to become better acquainted. They decided to limit membership to one representative of each profession and to rotate the meeting site among each member's place of business, to acquaint each other with their various vocations and to promote business. This rotation of meeting places is the source of the name "Rotary". Once established, Rotary Club membership grew rapidly.

The second Rotary Club was founded in San Francisco in 1908. Once clubs were formed in Canada and Great Britain, in 1912, Rotary became an international organization. Since 1905, the ideas of Paul Harris and his friends have become ideals accepted by people of practically all nationalities, and of many political and religious beliefs. Today, there are Rotary Clubs in over 200 countries – from Anchorage, Alaska, USA to Wellington, New Zealand.

The universal acceptance of Rotary principles has been so great that there are now more than 46,000 Rotary clubs, with a membership of over 1.2 million men and women. Rotary’s motto is "Service Above Self". Therefore, Rotarians live by an ethical guideline called a Four-Way Test.  This is used by Rotarians worldwide to evaluate the things they think, say, or do.

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

What is Wings of Rotary?

Since 1976, Oklahoma’s District 5750 and Miyagi and Iwate prefectures’ District 2520 of Japan have exchanged students as part of a two-week exchange program.

Students between the ages of 15-17 entering tenth through twelfth grades the following school year and residing in District 5750.   Generally, the group consists of 6-8 students and an adult Rotarian team leader.  We refer to the team that is going to Japan as our Outbound Team.

During this adventure abroad, students generally visit Morioka, Sendai, and Hanamaki attending Rotary meetings, wearing traditional attire, experiencing a tea ceremony, enjoying the warmth of onsen, surfing the Sea of Japan, visiting thousand-year-old villages, and simply relishing the beauty of a peaceful, loving country. They learn of Japan’s history, current Japanese lifestyle and culture with much focus on  and their beliefs in putting others first by caring for their country and fellow Japanese by reducing pollution, recycling, putting others first and looking out for one another.

By taking part of Wings of Rotary, students learn a new way of living, a great deal about themselves, and maybe even a new language. Our Outbound Team members serve as ambassadors for the United States by teaching the Japanese about their country, culture and ideas. These young representatives can help the world grow closer together and make some good friends in the process.

Join approximately 7500 students, annually, worldwide who take this memorable journey and experience youth exchange through Rotary International.  Are you ready for this once-in-lifetime experience?
